Then she thought about Clara and Diana, about all the pain that they’d endured over the last few hours, and realised how short life was.

“I promise you that after this case is over, I will make more time for you and Francesca. I promise you,” Nikki replied, taking his hands and trying to remember all the reasons she fell in love with Enzo. “I know I haven’t been as present as I could be. But I promise I’m going to try and change that.”

He looked sadly at her, clearly wanting to believe her but only having experience to guide him.

They stayed up watching the film together, unable to think of anything more to say.

Suddenly, she saw the flash of something outside.

“What was that?” Enzo asked, glancing lazily in the direction of the flash.

Nikki got up and wandered over to the window, and she froze.

Someone was standing outside.

“Go upstairs to Francesca’s room,” she commanded, looking at her husband. “And stay there until I say otherwise.”

“But,” Enzo began to protest, but something inside her snapped, tired of having every single move she made second-guessed.

“Just do it!” she growled and headed outside, glad she was still fully dressed.

She came out and saw somebody standing on the opposite side of the road. He seemed to be holding a camera in front of him.

And as soon as he saw Nikki, he darted down the road.

But Nikki gave chase after him, and it didn’t take long for her to catch him and tackle him to the ground.

“Get the fuck off me, you crazy bitch!” he exclaimed, trying to wriggle out from underneath the sergeant. But she held him firm.

She took hold of his camera, wondering what kind of evidence there would be on there.

She turned him over to get a good look at him.

It wasn’t the sponsor. This guy was bald and had a thick ginger beard, looking nothing like the man in the sketch and the CCTV.

She searched through his pockets for any ID, pulling out a wallet and a driver’s license. Brett McGill.

“Mr McGill,” she began, preparing to make a citizen’s arrest, then realising she wasn’t sure why she was arresting him. But either way, if he had anything to do with the sponsor, she’d feel much safer with him locked up in a cell overnight.

She marched him to her car, considering whether she should tell Enzo she’d be popping out.

No, probably best not to spread the alarm. Francesca was a perceptive child who would easily pick up on it. She’d call him and explain she had to pop outside, make up some excuse. She’d had plenty of practice, after all.
